DEPRESSION & SUICIDE AWARENESS
About Depression:
First of all, you are not crazy! Depression is an illness just like any other. Many of us immigrate on our own, and isolation and loneliness are difficult to overcome. As Irish people, it is difficult for us to admit the need for counseling and medication when we need it.
You may be depressed if you:
· Have trouble sleeping or are tired all the time. · Have no appetite and poor concentration. · Feel sad and have lost interest in socializing. · Are frequently nervous or anxious. · Have engaged in self-destructive behavior · Have had thoughts about wanting to die
About Suicide:
When people of any age feel isolated and alone, they sometimes consider suicide. Warning signs for suicide include previous suicidal behavior, verbal threats, substance abuse, obsession with death, withdrawn social behavior, or sudden happiness after a long depressed period. Don’t take chances. Ask questions and express concern. Seek help for yourself or your friend!
Families and friends of suicide victims also need help to deal with their grief. There are many counseling services available in the NY area for those who need to talk to someone.
If you need help: Call 911 immediately for emergency care and evaluation if someone you know is suicidal.
